Material and methods: The research was carried out in two phases from April to December 2018. The first phase was quantitative, involving surveys with directors of childcare centers. The second phase used case studies. Results: The results indicate that gifted students in foster care receive different levels of support depending on their living environments. Children in urban environments had more opportunities to develop their interests than children in rural environments. The financial situations of foster care facilities were also important, as not all facilities could pay for additional classes or tutoring. Conclusions: The research demonstrates numerous difficulties with cooperation because some educational institutions treat foster care children differently. Teachers did not understand the difficult situations children faced in foster care. Additionally, no classes were offered for gifted children. Teachers were not prepared to work with them and often created artificial pedagogical issues or treated gifted students as a problem.

Unfortunately, the latter aspect i lacking in children in foster care (especially in institutional care). The researchers and analyses af analyzed phenomenon allow to conclude that children in foster care are often a neglected group in terms of upbringing, education, personal models, values and life priorities. Foster care should be and educational environment designed to compensate for deficiencies in the care, upbringing, or education of the child entrusted to it, including gifted children. Research on the educational opportunities for gifted foster care children was carried out in 6 Polish voivodeships: Lublin, Warmia-Masuria, Podlasie, Subcarpathia, Świętokrzyskie and Masovia , over a two years period - from April 2018 to June 2020. The research was quantitative and qualitative in nature. It allowed authors to conclude that a gifted child in institutional care faces numerous problems, including the lack of adequate support from both educational institutions and the foster care system in developing passions, interests and abilities. Celem badań było zidentyfkowanie czynników mogących mieć wpływ na rozwój zdolności podopiecznych. Badania prowadzono od kwietnia do grudnia 2018 - zbadano zainteresowania wychowanków pieczy zastępczej, określono specyfikę funkcjonowania zdolnych wychowanków w środowiskach zastępczych. Zbieranie danych rozłożono na dwie fazy, w pierwszej fazie (badania sondażowe) wykorzystano kwestionariusz ankiety dla podopiecznych (10 lat i powyżej), analizę dokumentów i wywiad z dyrektorem placówki. W drugiej fazie na podstawie kryteriów psychopedagogicznych, tj. nominacje rodzicielskie (w tym wypadku nominacje wychowawców); autonominacje; uczestnictwo w konkursach i zawodach; posiadane zainteresowania i ich rozwijanie wyłoniono przypadki zdolnych podopiecznych i przeprowadzono wywiady jakościowe na ich temat. Badania pozwoliły na określenie problemów związanych z funkcjonowaniem społecznym zdolnych podopiecznych w środowisku pieczy zastępczej oraz przybliżyły rodzaje wsparcia oferowanego im przez to środowisko. Streszczenie: The article presents results of the research on the functioning of gifted children in foster care in three provinces of eastern Poland, however, children showing both general as well as profile talents undergone analysis. The aim of the research was to identify factors that may affect the development of the pupils talents. The research was conducted from April to December 2018 - not only the interests of foster care pupils were examined but also the specificity of gifted children functioning in foster environments was determined. Data was collection in two phases. In the first phase (survey) a questionnaire for pupils (10 years and older), document analysis and interview with the principals of the facility were used. In the second phase, on the basis of psychopedagogical criteria, i.e. parental nominations (in this case nominations of educators); autonominations; participation in competitions or contests; possessed interests and their development, cases of gifted wards were selected. Therefore, qualitative interviews were conducted in order to acquire some information about them. The research both allowed to identify problems related to the social functioning of gifted pupils in the foster care environment and brought closer the types of support offered to them by this environment.
