Polish universities, similarly to other state institutions, receive financial resources for this purpose from the budget. Within the legal framework, students can obtain financial support in the form of social and special scholarships, allowances for the disabled, rector's scholarships for academic performance, grants and the minister's scholarships for outstanding achievements in science or sport. Receiving a particular form of assistance depends on meeting formal criteria specified for each type of assistance. The following article aims at analyzing the types of material support provided at PSW, a university in Biała Podlaska, their amount and impact on the students' socio-economic situation in terms of satisfying their existential needs. It attempts to determine to what extent the financial aid provides students with security and diminishes their fears about the future. To achieve the goal, the article presents quantitative research conducted in 2017 on a group of 884 students. It used a diagnostic survey in the form of a questionnaire containing closed questions. Students' participation in the study was voluntary and based on a random selection. The study was carried out online in the period from 1 to 31 March 2017. The analytical part of the research involved the programme STATISTICA 10, which by using statistical tests determined the relationships between particular variables. In all the analyzed cases, the significance level was assumed at p <0.05, and statistically significant responses were marked with an asterisk (*). As a result of the conducted research, it was found that financial support addressed to students is an essential element of improving their socio-economic situation. The dominant form of assistance in the examined group was the social scholarship, and, in students' opinion, the criteria for awarding benefits are clear, objective and understandable. Accordingly, it has been proven that material aid can be both efficient and effective in enhancing students' capacity to engage in the educational process.

Commonly, the areas of citizen and public protection refer to health, education, social issues or culture. Accordingly, the subject literature often comes forward with the term "social security" to refer to the issues of social exclusion. It covers a widely understood state support that provides a minimum standard of living, including free access to education, cultural events and health treatment for individuals and their families. However, social security may also refer to young people involved in the educational process who do not have sufficient funds to secure their educational needs. Having the above in mind, the article aims at identifying such needs and actions taken by PSW, a university in Biała Podlaska, that help prevent social exclusion of the poorest students through providing them with different forms of material help. To achieve the goal, the article presents quantitative research conducted on a group of 884 students. The study involved a diagnostic survey in the form of a questionnaire consisting of several closed questions. Students' participation in the study was voluntary and based on a random selection. The research was conducted on-line in the period from 1 to 31 March 2017 and applied the programme STATISTICA 10 to analyze particular variables. By using statistical tests, the relationships between variables were examined. In all the analyzed cases, the significance level was assumed at p <0.05, and statistically significant responses were marked with an asterisk. Basing on the analysis of own research, we have found that over 80.0% of the respondents examined at PSW have an opportunity to meet their basic needs thanks to the material support from the university. Over 1/3 of the tested students would not be able to continue their studies without the material aid received from the institution. Additionally, it turned out that every fifth student quite often supports the closest family with the funds from the university. Accordingly, as the respondents admit, the material support received at the institution allowed them to fully satisfy their existential needs, which in turn let them concentrate on own educational needs.

The research group numbering 268 students were tested to find out their skills needs, preferences and reason for choosing the university and faculty, including a relationship variables considered statistically significant. The result of the research is to demonstrate the differences between faculties in social sciences.

Streszczenie: It is the universities' duty to discover and transmit knowledge and competences through scientific research and educating students. Decision to undertake university studies, among people from rural areas, is aimed at eliminating the possibility of educational exclusion. The aim of the article is to build a profile of a student from rural areas, divided by gender, in the context of meeting the needs and aspirations connected with education. When creating the student profile, only those characteristics that occurred statistically significant relationship with respect to gender, were taken into account. The results correspond with research conducted since the seventies of the twentieth century in Poland. There are similar results concerning the reasons to undertake tertiary education, choice of the faculties, and sources of information concerning studies.

Subject of the research were the students from seven faculties in two universities from Biala Podlaska: computer science, public health, medicine, nursing, tourism and recreation, physiotherapy and PE (physical education] - 548 people in total were the participants. In the work, the method of diagnostic survey based upon the questionnaire technique was applied. Faculty is the aspect that has great impact on the type of chosen forms of physical activities, reasons of its choice, barrier and importance of physical activities in the participants' lives. Students from such faculties as PE and tourism and recreation show more physical activity in contrast to students from other faculties. More attention should be paid to extension and promotion of physical activity - a very important part of healthy lifestyle - in didactical-educational work of universities.
